Hi, we’re Suze and Lee Weaver

We hope you will join us as we transition from our very "normal" life to something a little less traditional. We are not experts in downsizing, minimalism, early retirement, or full-time RV living. In fact, we’re not experts in anything! Our goal for this blog is simply to share our travels and adventures with our friends and family. Along the way we hope to continuously learn, grow, and laugh.

The 2019 Battle of the Bend (BOB) was held in St. Louis., MO on the 3rd Saturday in July. The date is fixed to allow everyone to plan their busy summer schedules around this most important gathering. This year’s BOB was a huge success with 41 golf participants and many, many more joining in on BOB related activities. Yeah, it was hot in St. Louis, but it was hot everywhere. There was no where to run from the heat.

My mom, Barb Weaver, was the oldest participant in the BOB this year. This team looks pretty darn good considering they just finished 18 holes in the 98 degree heat of St. Louis!

Suze told the history of the BOB in an earlier post so I won’t go into all of that again. I’ll just add that the BOB has historically been hosted by one of the Marquette clan (or our parents) - we all graduated in the mid 80’s.

Over the years, as our families grew, the BOB grew too. In fact, now the second generation BOBers out number the first. We’ve invited friends and family, and our kids have invited friends. Our parents have played in and participated in BOB parties for years. It seems that once you’ve attend a BOB you’re hooked. Early on we proclaimed, “Once a BOBer, always a BOBer” and everyone seems to take this motto to heart.

Friday night draft party fun! Everyone always looks forward to seeing who they’ll be playing with on Saturday.

What’s the point of all of this? Well, this year’s BOB was hosted by a pair of 2nd generation BOBers. Jack and Nicho Sorrentino did a masterful job of organizing this enormous outing. They received a bit of support from their parents (thanks Pat and Vonda!), but the kids have proven themselves more than capable of continuing the BOB tradition into the future. In fact, another pair of 2nd generation BOBers are hosting next year in Greensboro, NC. Thanks for taking on the task Michael and Ciarah. Can’t wait until next year - gone to BOB-olina in my mind!

Ok, I can’t hold this part back any longer. The team of Kellen Jordan, Debbie Weaver, Rory Orgil, and I won the Bob! Our final score of -8 won by 2 strokes over a couple of worthy teams. In 2003, I won my third BOB. Back then, I never imagined it would be 16 years before I won again. I’m relieved to finally have the curse lifted! Thanks to Rory, Debbie, and Kellen for ending my drought. I look forward to seeing our names on the BOB Trophy as 2019 Champions!

Dillon and his team came in 2nd place, but there is no trophy for 2nd place at the BOB. Maybe next year Dillon.

The Winning Team! Rory, Kellen, me, and my sister Debbie. I think Rory and Kellen would agree, Debbie was the MVP!

Nothing tastes better than victory Champagne from the Cup. Notice Kellen’s poise as he awaits his turn - a true champion.

Jack Sorrentino Sr., Pat’s father and Jack and Nicho’s grandfather, is remembered every year at the BOB. Jack embodied the true spirit of the BOB. He committed his life to Faith, Family, and Friends. Every year we honor him by presenting a BOBer with the You Don’t Know Jack Award. The winner is someone who loves the BOB and understands that it’s all about Jack’s values. We get together every year to play golf. We share and re-share the same old stories. But mostly, we enjoy spending a couple of days with the people we love - family and friends. It’s fitting that this year’s winners of the You Don’t Know Jack Award are Jack and Nicho Sorrentino. They have embraced the BOB since they were pre-teens and now they have hosted a BOB! They get it.
