What is The BOB, you may ask???
The BOB stands for “Battle of the Bend”, started by these four jokers, in South Bend, Indiana. Pictured top to bottom left to right…Jim “Boxcar” Krillenberger, Lee Weaver, Mark Scheiber (or SchReiber, as Lee’s dad Larry calls him!!) and Don MacDonell. They grew up in South Bend , Indiana and have been friends since the 8th grade. (1976! 43 years!!)
The BOB was an annual golf outing, used as a way for the four of them to get together and keep in touch at LEAST once a year. It started out very informal, getting together in South Bend, sometime every summer, and playing a round of golf together. That was over 20 years ago. It slowly morphed into a few of Lee’s family members joining in, then a few friends joining in, then a few more….
What we have today is a multi generational/ different host city every year/ third Saturday in July/ largely Marquette University alum/ their friends and family/ with South Bend family and friends at the root core.
The host and host city are chosen every year at The BOB. (example: last year Mike Tedesco, Marquette friend and alum, and his wife Marick hosted in Yachats , Oregon because they live in Oregon!) Many different people and many different cities have hosted The BOB. There is a draft party the night before The BOB where the captains and teams are chosen. Lots of eating, drinking, laughing, and trash talking involved. Then on Saturday (always the 3rd Saturday in July) the teams of 4 play a round of golf.( I think the record # of teams to play is 11!) Then there is The BOB after party, put on by the hosts. Again, lots of eating, drinking, laughing, and trash talking involved. There is a trophy awarded to the winning team. The trophy is modeled after The Stanley Cup, with tiers and engravings. The trophy is called The BOB.
So, that is a brief history and a bit of an explanation about The BOB. More info and pictures and history will be coming soon, by one of “the founding fathers” (Lee) , as the original 4 are called! ( or INSIST on being called!! ha!)
“once a BOBer always a BOBer!
