We Bought a Truck! It's Huge!
We bought a new Ford F250! We’ve been researching trucks for some time. We were hoping to find something slightly used, but we just couldn’t find what we wanted. So, we ended up with a 2019 silver F250 truck named Ol’ Blue.
There are so many things to consider when looking at trucks. A smaller F150 could pull our Goldie fine, but we thought we needed the extra payload that the F250 provides - we are going to be carrying all of our worldly possessions with us!
Gas or Diesel? 1/2 ton, 3/4, ton, or 1 ton? We decided on a F250 6.2L gas truck. Doing our research we found the gas vs diesel debate interesting. Certainly, people are very passionate about their trucks and they have very strong opinions. Diesels provide more towing power and better fuel economy. Though they cost about $8,000 more than the gas, the diesels seem to hold their value better.
On the other hand, gas currently costs less than diesel fuel, and gas trucks tend to be a bit less expensive to maintain. In the end, the gas truck can easily tow our 7600 lb trailer over the biggest mountains (and more importantly slow it down when coming down those mountains). The deciding factor was that the 6.2L gas engine provides about 500 lbs more payload than the diesel. Basically, since the engine is lighter you can load-up the cab and bed with more stuff.
At some point you just have to decide. Did we buy the best truck for our needs? We shall see... Certainly, we’ll be putting a lot of faith in Ol’ Blue. She’ll be carrying us, our home, and all of our possessions as we explore North America.
